Floodlight™ MS
Improving patient adherence and data collection for the Floodlight™ MS app
Floodlight™ MS' mission is to improve the lives of people affected by Multiple Sclerosis. By tracking the patient physical and cognitive status over time, it enables better conversations and care decisions with their healthcare provider.
Overview
Floodlight™ MS is a SaMD (Software used as a Medical Device) for smartphone-based objective measurements in MS. Patients take weekly activities on the Floodlight™ MS app and receive a score. Their healthcare team can see the score on a web-based portal.

Problem
Floodlight™ MS is only as good as the data it collects, and patients were simply not taking their activities with enough consistency. I worked closely with the user research team to find out why.
Some users were taking their activities but were not doing them correctly
We observed some accidental user gestures that would cause an error
Despite in-app reminders and push notifications, it was hard for some users to remember to take the activities and remain motivated throughout the year
Impact
Reduced decision-making time from 2 weeks to 1-3 days and enabled longer-term product roadmaps. Read about it here: Improving Floodlight™ MS internal processes
Delivered strategy and multiple features to improve patient adherence. Read about it here: Improving Floodlight™ MS patient adherence
Delivered a journal feature to improve data contextualisation. Read about it here: Improving Floodlight™ MS data contextualisation
Learnings
FDA-approved digital devices face unique challenges. Changes to the device’s intended use (for example, from data visualisation to data interpretation), can trigger re-submission for approval, which is costly and takes a minimum of 90 days.
Testing with real users is imperative when working with people who have some degree of disability, which in the case of MS can be both physical and cognitive.
Translations are a huge factor that greatly impacted our workflow: working closely with the localisation team was key to avoiding delays in releases.
